Borax FAQ
Is borax banned in the UK?
No, but sales are restricted. Borax is classified Repr. 1B, so it cannot be sold to the public as a household product. Supply for professional, industrial and laboratory use is still permitted.
What is borax used for?
Soldering and brazing flux, ceramic glazes, timber treatment, laboratory buffers, specimen preservation and professional alkaline cleaning.
What is the difference between borax and borax substitute?
Borax is sodium tetraborate. Borax substitute is a blend of washing soda and baking soda with no boron. The substitute is the right choice for laundry and home cleaning.
Is borax the same as boric acid?
No. Both contain boron, but borax is alkaline and boric acid is weakly acidic. They behave differently and are not swapped like for like.
Can I use borax to make slime?
We do not supply borax for slime or any use involving children. Choose a ready-made slime kit with a safety-tested activator instead.
How should I store borax?
Sealed, dry, away from food and out of reach of children. Moist air makes it cake. See our full guide on how to store borax powder.
