Why a substitute?
Real borax can no longer be sold in the UK as a household product. This substitute is built from sodium carbonate (washing soda, 45%) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, 55%). Together they give an alkaline wash that does most of the jobs people used borax for at home, without the reproductive toxicity classification.
How to use it
- Laundry booster: add one scoop (about 30g) to the drum with your usual detergent. Use a little more in hard water areas.
- Whites and towels: pre-soak overnight in warm water with two scoops to lift greyness and musty smells.
- Kitchen and oven: mix with a splash of water into a paste for baked-on grease. Leave for 15 minutes, then wipe.
- Drains and bins: sprinkle in, follow with hot water to freshen.
Not suitable for aluminium, wool or silk. Patch test on delicate surfaces. Keep away from eyes.
